Terrell Suggs to miss ‘Skins game on Thursday
August 11th, 2009 | by Kevin Hanson |When the Baltimore Ravens open the pre-season on Thursday against the Washington Redskins, they’ll do so without the services of the highest-paid linebacker in league history. Terrell Suggs, who has a strained Achilles tendon, won’t be putting on the pads Thursday night, according to ESPN.
“I don’t even feel like I’m part of the team,” Suggs said. “I hardly ever come out to practice because I don’t want to stand around and see all the guys working hard while I’m not able to play.”
During his six-year career, Suggs has not missed a regular-season or post-season game. And although he missed training camp last year, he still finished with 102 tackles and a team-high eight sacks.
Suggs, who was the league’s Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2003, made the Pro Bowl last year — continuing his even-year Pro Bowl trend (2004, 2006, and 2008).
“Every day I want to try to give it a go, but as soon as I start walking on it I start feeling the swelling and the liquid in the heel,” Suggs said. “I don’t want to rush it back and then get hurt again. I don’t want to have a season like that.”
“I know he wants to play. It’s not a major injury but it’s a nagging injury,” coach John Harbaugh said. “He’ll be out here soon, and he wants to be.”
While Suggs would like to be out there, it makes much more sense to let his injury heal instead of rushing it for a meaningless game in the pre-season.
