Derrick Mason ends retirement
August 1st, 2009 | by Kevin Hanson |Derrick Mason retired on July 13th. If you weren’t sold on a Mason’s retirement, you weren’t alone — but you were right.
Less than three weeks after retiring, Mason has come out of retirement and will practice with the team at training camp on Sunday.
“It was a tough decision, but I think it was a good decision for me to come back,” Mason said in a statement. “I needed to evaluate my life, football and my career.
“I still have an intense fire inside me, and I want to play. … I felt like I had left something undone, and I wanted to finish it. I believe this is a good example for my son and my daughter on how to be thoughtful and also follow through.”
Having Mason back will help Joe Flacco continue to develop as he enters his sophomore season. It also gets the Ravens out from behind the eight ball with their receiver situation.
In 2008, Mason caught 80 passes for 1,037 yards. In fact, Mason has put up back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons.
But the next four receivers on the Ravens’ depth chart caught only 55 passes last year. Mark Clayton had 41, Demetrius Williams had 13 and Kelley Washington had one. Marcus Smith didn’t have any receptions.
